Producer InformationThe stories of the Domaine Marey-Monge and the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti intermingle. It all began in 1763, when Claude Marey acquired the Château Micault from the Secretary of King Louis XV, as well as many grapevines. When he died, his son Nicolas-Joseph Marey inherited everything. Nicolas-Joseph also bought the entire Romanée-Saint-Vivant vineyard in 1791, two years after the French Revolution started. One year later, he married Charlotte Émilie Monge (the daughter of Gaspard Monge, founder of the École Polytechnique) and together they decided to build the Château de Pommard (located near the eponymous town), to replace the Château Micault Nicolas-Joseph lost to the French Empire. The Marey-Monge family remained in charge of this new estate for more than a hundred years. Over the years, the Marey-Monge family sold some parts of its gigantic Burgundy vineyard, due to financial problems. First to the Latour family, in 1898, and to the Noellat family some time later. The Romanée-Saint-Vivant AOC was created in 1936, inspired by the Abbey of Saint-Vivant (which used to own many vineyards in the Vosne-Romanée region). In 1966, the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti took a lease on the 5 remaining hectares of the Romanée-Saint-Vivant vineyard. They kept the "Marey-Monge" name on their labels until 1973. That year, the regular DRC label replaced the Marey-Monge one. When the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti finally bought the vineyard it was leasing in 1988, the Marey-Monge name completely disappeared from the label, only to reappear in 1993. Since then, it has remained on the bottles of DRC. The Château de Pommard still exists today and it's even considered to be one of the crown jewels of the Côte de Nuits. Its Clos Marey-Monge, created in 1795, is probably the most famous selection of grapevines it has to offer (20,000 bottles are produced each year, made with Pinot Noir). One of the parcels is even named "Nicolas-Joseph" and another one "Émilie", as an homage to the original founders of the estate. The entire estate was converted to biodynamics in 2007, thanks to its new manager Emmanuel Sala. As for the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, it is today Burgundy's most beloved wine estate and is known all over the world.
